Haghpat

While getting used to the church architecture in Armenia, it is hard to imagine that a new church will surprise you. But it is impossible not to remain under the impression after becoming acquainted with the Haghpat complex. Founded in 976, Haghpat is unique in its kind, both in scale and complexity of architecture.

One of the largest monastic complexes at the time, Haghpat was a large developing center. Several churches, a parish, a chapel, a printing house, a refectory, and even its own fortress, which protected from frequent Arab raids. All of the above mentioned distinguished Haghpat from the rest of the monasteries.

The architecture of the complex is unique in that it is asymmetric and at the same time compact. All buildings in the territory seem to be interconnected and directed to the top. It creates a general silhouette, which becomes an extension of the mountains around.

Since 1996, Haghpat has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Sanahin

As if grown up among trees and mountains, the monastery of Sanahin is so ancient that it has long been a part of its surrounding nature. It feels like being on the site of some amazing film, except for the fact that this is all pure reality.

Sanahin was built in the 10th century in the village with the same name. It was a cultural center where humanities, music and medicine were taught. The monastery had a library and many famous students. According to legend, it was erected at the place where Gregory the Illuminator placed the cross.

This amazing place has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996.
